  • Traumatic end of life at home

    Hello

Last Tuesday I watched my dad die at home. He had pancreatic cancer but through lack of linked up care in 4 different hospitals and various inaccurate advice about the pain (eg surgery recovery/pancreatitis) he was never given proper palliative care or support. He died after the most traumatic 8 days, still in denial and believing what consultants had advised him and with no plans in place or last words said.

He suffered from horrendous oral secretions on the syringe pump for 3 days. Harrowing and heartbreaking to watch. He was a gentleman, a good, kind man. Aged 74

    Hi AliceT

Welcome to the Marie Curie Online Community.

I'm sorry to hear about that dad wasn't given the correct kind of palliative support or care. We are aware that not everyone gets the end of life care that they deserve and it is something that we are campaigning to change.

It sounds like it was tough for you to see dad going through all of this. Our Support Line is here for you if you would ever like to talk about what you experienced and how you are feeling now on Freephone 0800 090 2309.

We hope that others will see your post and offer some kind words too.

    Take care,

    Hannah - Support Line Officer
