I just turned 17 and the only person I have in my life right now is my dad, I need him more than anything and he only has a few weeks or days to live. I can't wrap my head around it, I'm not prepared at all! It's already like he's gone though. His speech isn't there anymore and I don't know how to talk to him without getting upset. Please help, I can't sleep or eat and I feel like my mum isn't quite there for me. What do I do? I've never experienced loss before and I'm just not prepared. X

    Hi Natalie1,

I am so very sorry to hear about your Dad, obviously the two of you are very close. When we know someone we love is going to die we often begin grieving for them before it actually happens. This can show itself physically such as not sleeping as well as emotionally. Finding someone you feel you can talk to can be very important at this time. If you are still at school or college is there a tutor or counsellor you feel you could talk to? Does your Dad have a palliative care nurse who you could speak to, they are there to support the whole family not only your Dad. There is support out there for you with organisations who specialise in assisting young adults through grief - www.mariecurie.org.uk/help/support-directory/bereavement-support. You may also find information on our website helpful - www.mariecurie.org.uk/help/bereaved-family-friends/coping-grief-teenager. Talking about how you are feeling can be very helpful and we are here for you in the Marie Curie community. If you feel it would help you to talk please also contact us on our support line – 0800 090 2309.
