    Hello

I am new to the board. I am not sure whether I should be here. I lost my Dad six months ago (it wasn't cancer, it was a stroke) and my mum three years ago to breast cancer. I am not doing so well. I feel sad and unhappy most of the time. I am in my 50's, have a loving husband and good friends but I miss my mum and dad so much. I feel so unhappy and empty and out of sorts. Very lonely. I am not sure what's happening to me. Should I be grieving this long after Dad died? Why am I still unhappy about my mum when it was three years ago? Life just doesn't feel the same anymore.

    Hi Popinjay,

Welcome to the Marie Curie online community.

I am sorry to hear about your parents. It’s understandable that you are feeling the way you are, bereavement can bring with it lots of difficult emotions and this can include feelings of unhappiness and emptiness. There is no right or wrong way to grieve and no timescale you should feel you need to follow. You might find it helpful to look at our information on grieving in your own way here: www.mariecurie.org.uk/help/support/bereaved-family-friends/dealing-grief/grieving-your-way

Some people find it helpful to talk about how they are feeling. This might be through going to a support group in your local area where you can talk to others that may be feeling similar to yourself. Others prefer to talk one to one through support such as counselling. Cruse Bereavement Care is an organisation that might have both support groups and one to one support near you. You can search for your area on this section of their website: www.cruse.org.uk/bereavement-services/get-help . Another way to access counselling is via your GP surgery.

If you would like to talk about things in more detail please call our Free phone Support Line on 0800 090 2309, or drop us a line via Web Chat:

    Best Wishes
