Hello Gingerkel, we’d like to welcome you to our online community – thank you for taking the time to share your personal situation with us and others.

We’re sorry to read about your dad’s diagnosis and how he’s feeling. We are aware of a few organisations that can offer local support as well as some that organise social activities. As we don’t know dad’s local area or his age, we can’t signpost directly to organisations that are relevant to him but have included some examples below of where you can look to find local support.

Macmillan Cancer Support have a search tool on their website where you can look to see what support is available in your local area. This ranges from support groups, practical help and information centres. If you wish to look into this, you can access this search function on their website, here: https://www.macmillan.org.uk/in-your-area/choose-location.html#17314 .

Maggie’s is another charity that supports those with a cancer diagnosis, they have a number of centres across the UK where they offer free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their loved ones. You can find out more about the work they do and whether there is a Maggie’s Centre in your dad’s area, here: https://www.maggiescentres.org/how-maggies-can-help/ .

Age UK and the Royal Voluntary Service are charitable organisations that provide local services to support older people. This can include social activities as well as practical support. If this is relevant to your dad, you can find what Age UK offer in his area using this link: https://www.ageuk.org.uk/ . Alternatively, you find out more about the Royal Voluntary Service here: https://www.royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk/our-services .

If you’d like to get in touch with us on the Support Line to share more detail, we can look to signpost to organisations that are specific and relevant to your dad. We can also provide practical information on a range of topics, as well as emotional support. If you or dad would like to reach us on the Support Line you can ring Freephone 0800 090 2309 or reply to us here on the community.

    Take care,

    Angharad – Support Line Officer.
