We are devastated - after months of speculation my husband (41) has been given a diagnosis of motor neurone disease. We have two children (12 and 14). Not sure what to do or how to support my husband. What can we do in the early days/weeks to help process this? :-(

    Hello LouiseMarie,

Welcome to our Online Community. We’re sorry to read about your husbands’ recent diagnosis and all that you’re going through as a family.

It’s understandable that you’re not sure what to do and have questions around how to process this news. When someone you know is diagnosed with an illness it’s normal to wonder what you should say or how you could support them at this time. We have information that you may find helpful on supporting someone who has been recently diagnosed with a terminal illness on our website here: https://www.mariecurie.org.uk/help/support/diagnosed/practical-emotional-support/supporting-someone .

The Motor Neurone Disease Association have information and support on their website that you may also find helpful: https://www.mndassociation.org/ (Motor Neurone Disease Scotland if you’re based in Scotland - https://mndscotland.org.uk/ ).

We hope that other people on our Online Community will see your message and share their experience with you too.

Our Support Line is also here for you if you would like to talk about how you’re feeling or if you have any questions. We also have an Information and Support Nurse available to talk to if you have any medical questions. You can reach the Support Line by calling 0800 090 2309 for free, or via our online chat service.

    Take good care,
