Can anyone tell me at what point my father can go on continuing health care. Even my MP Doesn’t understand. My father has been ill for 18 months and we are getting very close to the end. I cared for him by moving into his home. I left my husband at home alone last year for 8 months. Dad went for respite and decided to stay. We have only enough money for one more month as we have gone through £40000 already. One doctor said yes we should get it then district said no we do not qualify !!!!

    Hello Momo

I am sorry to read about your father’s illness and the situation you are facing whilst caring for your father.

The rules for continuing healthcare can be complicated, we are aware that sometimes even doctors and nurses don’t always understand them. We feature information on our website about NHS Continuing Healthcare that you can access here: .

On our NHS Continuing Healthcare web page above, we feature external websites that may be useful to you. It’s often a good idea to get support from someone who fully understands how the system currently works where you live, as it can vary around the UK. We are aware that your local Citizens Advice may be able to help with the process too.

If you live in England, there is an organisation called Beacon. They feature expert advisers on their phone lines who are there to answer questions on any aspect of NHS Continuing Healthcare. You can access their information and read more about what they can offer on their website here:

We hope that this information will be of some use to you. If you or any of the family need a listening ear, do not hesitate to get in touch with our Freephone Support Line on 0800 090 2309 or you can contact us via our web chat function here:

    Take care
