Supporting my child

Hi, new on here and looking for some guidance please. We recently lost my father in law unexpectedly after a short period of time. We now know my mother in law has terminal lung cancer with not long to live. My 10 year old daughter is extremely close to her Nanan and whilst during the day is fine, at night she is struggling with extreme insomnia and it’s starting to affect her daily life and school. Would appreciate any advice on how to help her as I feel so helpless. Thanks in advance

Hello Debs01

I’m sorry to read about the recent loss of your father in law and to hear about your mother in law’s terminal illness.

It’s understandable that during this difficult time, you are looking for information to help you support your daughter. Have you spoken with the school recently about the issues and concerns that you have shared with us? We’re aware that sometimes schools have access to counselling services that you may want to enquire about. You may also already be aware that your daughter’s GP may know of support services that are appropriate to her needs too.

On our website we feature details about charities that are there to support children pre- and post-bereavement that you may find useful. You can find their contact details and more information by clicking here: https://www.mariecurie.org.uk/help/support/support-directory/bereavement-support#children

If you would like to talk about any of this further or just need a listening ear then do not hesitate to get in touch with our Support Line on Freephone 0800 090 2309 or you can contact us via our web chat function here: https://www.mariecurie.org.uk/help/support/marie-curie-support-line
