My father in law

Hi, my father in law went in hospital on Tuesday to have a tumor removed from his colon. When they opened him up they couldn’t do anything as all his vital organs had now been effected. He only had a camera scan 3 weeks ago. How could this have spread so fast and why can’t they say what his life expectancy is? Not sure if or when he’ll be home.

Hi Nancy,

Thank you for sharing your story with the community. Unfortunately we are not medically trained on the Support Line or here at the Community. I would suggest that the best person to answer these questions would be your Father- in- Law’s surgeon or the people involved in his health care. Many people talk to us about how they feel when the family receive news that they aren’t expecting. It can be a very emotional time for everybody involved and naturally you may have lots of questions which you need to ask.

We have some information on our website about living with a terminal illness which may help you understand both your Father- in-law’s and your own feelings. We also have practical information which can help you plan ahead: https://www.mariecurie.org.uk/help/terminal-illness

If you would like to talk about things in more detail please call our Free phone Support Line on 0800 090 2309, or drop us a line via Web Chat: https://www.mariecurie.org.uk/help

Best Wishes,

Brigette
