Signing up to the Community
Is the Community a safe space to talk?
Yes it is. We ask all users to follow our Community Guidelines, and posts are moderated by Marie Curie’s Online Community Team.
Do I need to register to use the Online Community?
No, anyone can use the online community without the need to register. However, to reply to posts you will need to create an account.
How do I create an account?
You can sign up by clicking on the Sign up button in the top right hand corner of the page.
Once you create your account, you will receive a verification email to the email address you used to sign up with. You’ll need to authenticate your online community account, by clicking the link in the email to confirm that you’re you and then you’ll be able to begin posting and responding to comments in the community.
If you don’t receive your verification email, check the spam folder in your email account and if it’s not there please get in touch with moderators@mariecurie.org.uk.
What should my username be?
Your username will be visible to others, so please choose one that doesn’t include any personal details such as your full name, date of birth, email address, or address. This helps keep you safe while using our Online Community.
How do I log in?
To log in to the community, go to the right-hand corner of the screen and click Log in. You’ll then need to enter your username and password, or you can sign in with Single Sign On by clicking Log in with Discourse ID, if you would like to use your Facebook, Google or Apple account.
Posting on the Community
How do I start a new thread?
Find the section of the community that best suits the question you’re asking or conversation you want to start, for example a question about state benefits for carers would go in our Caring for someone section while a question about Wills would fit in the Practical and legal matters section. Also, you can check to see if there’s an existing conversation on that topic and, if there is, think about replying to that instead of starting a new thread.
Click on the relevant section link and then click on the New Topic button. When choosing a title for your thread, try to be as descriptive as possible and avoid generic titles like ‘Help’ or ‘Question’. This will help you get a better response.
Then write your post in the comment box and click Create Topic to publish it to the community.
Don’t worry if you don’t get a reply immediately, it can take up 24 hours to get a reply.
How do I reply to an existing thread?
Make sure you’re logged in, click on the thread you want to reply on, click Reply and add your comment in the comment box and press Reply to publish it to the community.
I’ve made a mistake. How do I edit my post?
This is not a problem. Find your post, click on the pencil icon which is the edit button and make any changes you need to, and then click on the Save Edit button to save your edited post.
My profile
What should I write about myself here?
This is a space to tell us a little bit about yourself and the reasons you’ve come to the Community. You can write as much or as little as you like. Please don’t include your real name, address, phone number, email address or anything else that could be used to identify you.
How do I change my profile picture?
Go to profile in the top right-hand corner, select Summary then Preferences, within the account section. From here you can click on the pencil under the profile picture to edit. Select one of the avatars. Once that’s done press Save changes.
How do I change my email address?
Go to your profile (top right), select Summary, then Preferences. In the Account section, click the tool and then the pencil icon. Enter your new email address and click Change to save.
How do I change my username?
Please contact the Community Team at moderators@mariecurie.org.uk to request this.
Private messages
How do I send a private message?
Private messages are only possible between moderators and members. You won’t be able to send a private message to a moderator unless they have privately messaged you first. If you need to contact us, please email moderators@mariecurie.org.uk.
How do I find my private messages?
If you have any private messages from the Online Community Team these will appear in the notifications bar on the right-hand side of the screen.
How do I stop notifications?
Login in and click on your profile icon in the top righthand corner and then navigate to Profile. Next, select Settings and find Emails then Notifications. From here you can decide which notifications you want to keep.
General queries
Why do we use trust levels?
Trust levels help keep our community safe, welcoming, and easy to use.
They help us to:
-
Make sure new members aren’t overwhelmed while they’re getting started
-
Reduce mistakes, like posting too many links or using advanced features too soon
-
Protect the community from spam by limiting what new accounts can do at first
We’re currently trialling trust levels as part of our new online community platform, and we’d really welcome your feedback.
What do I do if someone has broken the Community guidelines?
If you think someone has broken the Community guidelines contact the Community Moderation team by clicking on the Flag button on each post. Then just ignore that post and let us handle things from there. Finally you can also contact us directly at moderators@mariecurie.org.uk.
