Husband terminal liver cancer

My husband of 5 weeks (we brought our wedding forward) has advanced liver cancer and no treatment is possible.

He is out of hospital after 4 weeks to enjoy time as much as possible.

His failing liver is causing increasing issues.

We are obviously devasted and sad about what wont be.

I tend to check in him lots and this frustrates him as he wants the ‘normal’ me.

Just want to enjoy the time we have but the sadness and anticipatory grief takes over at times.

No point to this post but know people will be going through similar and any advice etc happily received.

So sorry to hear this. We went through this process with my brother. I know my parents struggled alot with the balance of feeling like they needed to be his carer but still wanting to enjoy time with him as his parents and be present. I only really saw things shift a bit when we started leaning on hospice care. Both outpatient, eventually inpatient and aftercare therapies for the family. its so incredibly hard. sending you love x

Thank you for becoming involved in the community. Your present circumstances are devastating, as you say, and I’m so sorry that you are facing this with your husband. By reaching out here and sharing your experience you are inviting others to think, reply and perhaps take stock of their own situation… Your contribution is very much appreciated. I cannot imagine how this must feel for you - ‘the normal you’ may well be ‘a new normal’ given the news you have recieved and how you have had to adapt. Grief and anticipatory grief can be very overwhelming and our reactions may change and evolve - there is no right or wrong way to be. Do you have a support system or a person to discuss your feelings with? There is a Marie Curie support line which may be useful - 0800 090 2309. Please feel free to write here as often as you like or need to. I’m sending kind thoughts and appreciation for your post MrsRM.

Good morning MrsRM, and thank you for reaching out to our Community. I am so sorry to learn of your current difficulties in coping not only with your dear Husband`s decline, but also trying to deal with your own feelings and emotions at such a precious time for you both. Having just married and being told your future together is limited now is so tough as I`m sure you had lots of plans and hopes. Trying to just be “you” is a tough ask too as all you want to do is care for your Hubby, whilst he just wants things to be as normal as possible. Are there other family members who could possibly share his care with you to give you a little more time? I have attached a link to information on Anticipatory Grief which may also help you deal with this very real emotion.

Please don`t hesitate to keep in touch if you feel it would help. We are all thinking of you and hope his physical symptoms can be brought under control soonest.
