How to help ... my grandad has COPD, Diabetes and also problems with his heart

  • 10/07/2019  18:57

For a while now my grandad has had COPD and Diabetes which has been slowly getting worse over time.

Last June/July my grandad was admitted to hospital due to his COPD but not long after going in was taken to ICU and intubated for a few days but found out afterwards that he’d suffered from a heart attack.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago my grandad was admitted to hospital still having problems with his COPD and was taken to ICU and also intubated again but this time for a bit longer and after coming round found out that he had suffered from another minor heart attack.

On Monday (8th July) my mum had a meeting with one of the doctors caring for him about his care after being released from hospital but she also found out that they can’t tell yet how much time he might have left.

    Hello Hannah,

Thank you for sharing with us and others here on the community some more about what grandad has been going through.

You mention that you are wondering how to help, which is understandable. Many people tell us that they can feel at a loss about what they can do to best help to provide support, both practically and emotionally. We feature information on supporting a loved one living with a terminal illness on our website that you may find helpful to take a look at here -

Here on the Support Line we can also share information on how you may be able to support a loved one, including how you and the family may be able to access care and support. If you would like to reach out to us you are welcome to respond to this post, call us on Freephone 0800 090 2309 or via webchat -

We hope that others here on the community will also be able to share their families' experiences with you and what they feel has helped.

    Take care,

Clare - Marie Curie Support Line Team.
